As usual, the quiz follows the multiple-choice format that allows you to move through questions fairly quickly while leaving plenty of time for discussions about the stories and language exploration.
As before, the quiz is packed with common lexical chunks and other vocabulary that students can learn, practice and recycle. I admit I tend to gravitate toward the same news-heavy phrases year after year – take to the streets, went viral, protests broke out – so this year I've tried to incorporate everyday expressions such (to be) an item, hitch a ride and a thorn in someone's side (see Advanced level) to give students a broader range of useful language.
Formats
The quiz is available in three formats, all of which can be adapted to suit your needs:
- Google Slides presentation (Advanced version only). To make your own editable copy, click File → Make a copy.
Note: If you’d like to create Google Slides for the B1 version, feel free to share them!
- Google Doc (both levels). Editable and ready to use. To make your own editable copy, click File → Make a copy or → Download to save in your preferred format.
- Wayground (formerly Quizziz) - interactive quizzes (both levels) – ready to use in teacher-led or student-paced modes.
Teacher’s Guide
The accompanying Teacher’s Guide (10 pages) offers a wealth of ideas for:
- Pre-teaching key vocabulary
- Post-quiz ideas for reviewing and consolidating language
- Ideas for class discussions on the stories behind the headlines
As always, I’ll be sharing follow-up activities next week, designed to help students review and consolidate the language introduced in the quiz.
Wishing you a Happier New Year !
