News quiz 2015

Traditional end-of-year news quiz for the first lesson of the new year

The dress which went viral
To tell the truth, I almost broke the tradition this year when I decided not to publish my annual quiz. The year has been so depressing I simply couldn't think of the news items that wouldn't be about terror and murder. But, at the insistence of friends and colleagues, here's this year's edition of the lexically enriched news quiz, which I've tried to keep light on politics.

This time, the quiz comes only in one version: upper-intermediate/advanced (B2 +). However, I've also created a Kahoot quiz with slightly simplified questions, which might be suitable for lower levels.

The detailed 8-page teachers notes (scroll down) provide ideas on how to use the quiz with your students and how to explore the language from the quiz. As usual, activities for reviewing the lexis from the quiz will be posted in a few days. Check back in the New Year.

    1. Hi Anat

What happens when you click on DOWNLOAD ?
You should be able to download it and then do whatever you want, including printing.

Let me know if it works out

  7. Thanks for the quiz. The answer to the first question is wrong though - the colours represent the royalty (white) & the blue & red are the colours of Paris (according to my French students)! I followed it up with The BBC Review 2015 The Trending Year which is fun for young adults.

  8. Thank you for pointing that out - I guess I didn't "research" that one thoroughly. In fact, the answers are not important, if you ask me. If you've seen the teachers' notes, my suggestion is to let students find out the answers themselves and report in class.

Also, the whole thing is just a springboard for language work - so it's not so much about getting the answers right, but exploiting the language in the questions. I've just posted lots of follow-up vocab work. See here: http://leoxicon.blogspot.com/2016/01/news-quiz-2015-vocabulary.html

Thank you for visiting the blog and for the video suggestion!
